Train Horn for RAM Truck — 1500, 2500, 3500 Install Playbook
RAM 1500 DT/DS, 2500/3500 Cummins, eTorque hybrid wiring caveats. Alternator headroom, TIPM tap points, frame mount strategy by chassis.
Picking a train horn for truck install on a RAM splits into three platforms: RAM 1500 DT (5th gen 2019+), RAM 1500 Classic / DS (4th gen, sold as base 2019-2024), and RAM 2500/3500 6.7L Cummins HD (4th gen 2010+, 5th gen HD). Each has different alternator headroom, fuse panel access, and hybrid wiring rules. This page is the chassis-specific install playbook with verified RAM specs.

RAM 1500 DT (5th gen, 2019+) — install reality
Engine bay layout: under-hood TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) lives on the driver’s side front. “Located in the engine compartment, situated on the driver’s side (left front) of the vehicle” per fuse-box.info Ram 1500 documentation. The TIPM is a computer (not a passive fuse box) — feed your compressor power direct from the battery positive with inline 35 A fuse, not from the TIPM. Use the factory horn signal wire to trigger your relay.
Factory horn location: above the radiator upper crossmember, in front of the radiator just under the closeout panel. Access requires removing the front grille. Most installers replace the factory horn brackets with their own to mount Stebel Nautilus or compact Shocker XL trumpets in the same general area.
Frame mount real estate: the Diesel World Ram install case study confirms the standard 5-gallon tank can mount on the outside of the driver’s side frame rail under the cab, with the compressor on the inboard passenger frame rail away from exhaust heat. Same geometry on DT 1500 as on Cummins-equipped HD.
RAM 1500 eTorque hybrid — critical wiring rules
The 5.7L Hemi eTorque variant (also 3.6L Pentastar eTorque) replaces the conventional alternator with a 48V Belt-Starter Generator (BSG) / motor-generator unit. Per Green Car Reports’ eTorque writeup: “a 430-watt-hour lithium-ion battery pack… includes a 3-kilowatt DC-to-DC converter that converts 48 volts to 12 volts to charge the conventional 12-volt lead-acid battery for powering the RAM 1500 accessories.”
The 48V Li-ion pack lives behind the rear seat (MoparInsiders eTorque overview). The 12V AGM under the hood is the only safe tap point for aftermarket train horn install.
eTorque install rules (same architecture as F-150 PowerBoost / Tundra i-FORCE MAX):
- Tap power from the 12V AGM battery positive under the hood, not from the 48V harness (typically blue or orange loomed)
- Wire through an ignition-switched relay so the solenoid is fully de-energized when the truck is parked — avoids BMS low-voltage flags during long parks
- The 3 kW DC-DC converter is current-limited: keep compressor draw under 30 A continuous to stay within converter capacity
- Single-compressor only — dual-compressor builds will trip the converter

RAM 1500 Classic (DS, 2009-2018 / 2019-2024 base)
The DS-platform 1500 (still sold as Classic alongside DT through 2024) uses the older TIPM layout with a different fuse map than the DT. Factory alternator is 160 A standard on most 5.7L Hemi configurations, with 220 A optional on tow-package trims.
Factory horn location on 2013-2015 DS is on a “mounting bracket on the outer side of the driver’s front fender load beam, positioned above the left front fender wheel house” — different from the DT, requires fender liner pull.
Aux fuse access: 4th-gen TIPM is a single under-hood module on the driver’s side. Source fusesdiagram.com Dodge Ram 2009-2016. Same advice as DT — feed compressor power direct from battery positive, not through the TIPM.
RAM 2500 / 3500 6.7L Cummins HD — easy mode
This is the easiest RAM platform for train horn install. Factory dual Group 94R AGM batteries ship from the factory (Ram Forumz Cummins battery thread). Combined with a 180-220 A alternator, the Cummins HD handles dual-compressor kits without modification.
Power Wagon variant: same Cummins-style frame and dual-battery layout. The 1-up battery tray and winch bumper on Power Wagon configurations may displace the OE horn bracket — relocate trumpets to bumper bracket or roof if installing on Power Wagon.
Cummins-specific install (per Diesel World):
- Air tank on driver’s side frame rail under the cab
- Compressor on passenger frame rail away from exhaust heat (Cummins 6.7L exhaust runs hot)
- HornBlasters Conductor’s Special 544 Nightmare or refurbished Nathan K5LA both fit cleanly

| RAM Power Wagon | Conductor’s Special 544 with custom bumper bracket | $1,200+ |
Common RAM-specific install pitfalls
- Tapping the eTorque 48V harness. Orange/blue loomed cables under the hood are 48V — never tap. Use the 12V AGM under-hood battery only.
- Routing through the TIPM as a passive fuse box. TIPM is a computer; feed compressor power direct from battery+ with inline fuse within 18 inches of the battery.
- Skipping ignition-switched relay on eTorque. Without it, parasitic solenoid draw triggers BMS low-voltage flags during long parks (3+ days).
- Mounting compressor near 6.7L Cummins exhaust manifold. Exhaust runs hot; thermal cutoff every cycle. Mount on driver-side frame rail away from exhaust.
- Using factory horn fuse circuit on DS/DT. RAM factory horn fuse is 5-15 A; Stebel Nautilus pulls 18 A peak. Upgrade fuse to 25 A or run dedicated power.
RAM model years to call out
- DS (4th gen 1500): 2009-2018, continues as Classic 2019-2024
- DT (5th gen 1500): 2019+ with eTorque option on Hemi & Pentastar
- HD (4th gen 2500/3500): 2010+, 5th-gen HD continues 6.7L Cummins
- Power Wagon: 2014+ (current 4th-gen variant), 2024+ on 5th-gen HD
